HISTORY

Frimurarehotellet was first opened on May 1st 1878.

The building was earlier an elegant top shaped private house, where among others, Kalmar city's last Kommendant Peter Fredrik Kock resided.

When the hotel was first opened there were 18 guest rooms to offer which, according to the commercials of the time, where tastefully decorated. Since the hotel guests found the the rooms to be in excellent taste, an addition was constructed in 1928, allowing for a total of 35 available guestrooms.

The building was founded by the Freemasons In 1876. On May 22nd, the Freemasons walked in procession from the old Lodge building to the construction site. Beneath the building's southeastern corner a golden trowel was put, it was crafted by brothers A. Rosin, with an inscription in memory of the day. The house was originally drawn by famous architect J.F. Åbom, who among other buildings also designed Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern, Berns Salonger, Södra Teatern in Stockholm as well as a plethora of churches, castles and mansions. The house was expanded southwards to it's current location and appearance in 1928.

The property is still owned by the Kalmar Freemasons to this day, while the hotel business is run as a private enterprise.

Current owners of the hotel business, Jennie Mohlin and Jesper Liedstrand, have run the hotel since February 2010.

The hotel is renovated on a regular basis, with emphasis on keeping the genuine 19th century feeling of the building.


In a line of procedures to increase customer satisfaction, we have developed a quality system according to the SS-EN ISO 9001:2001 standard, and received our certificate on the 26th of August 1998. Certification body was AB SEMKO. During 2000, we focused on environmental management certification according to ISO 14001-standards. We received our certificate in environmental management systems according to ISO 14001 during a ceremony on the 11th of April 2000. This means that we, in the moment of writing, are the fourth hotel in Sweden to have double certificates in these ISO-standards.


Environmental policy:

The environment is one of our most valuable assets and Nya Frimurarehotellet i Kalmar AB functions in a trade where environmental issues are more and more put into focus. We are aiming for a constant development towards improving our environmental efforts, based on the idea of recycling, for a sustainable environment.

• Environmental efforts concern everyone and relies on co-operation between staff, guests and our suppliers.
• We will work towards minimizing our effect on the environment, foremost in the area of energy usage, purchases and waste disposal.
• Respect for the environment is a natural part of our business ambition and has therefore been integrated into our business system, as well as working with constant improvements and preventative measures against pollution.
• Environmental work is in constant development, and we will closely follow this development in order to incorporate new knowledge as soon at it is available, and also enable our guests to join in our efforts.
• We work closely with our suppliers and demand clear information and documentation of all purchases.
• We constantly keep close watch on and follow applicable environmental laws and other related requirements.
